First Country to Approve Lab-Grown Meat
San Francisco-based Eat Just Inc., known for plant-based alternatives to egg products – JUST Egg, gained approval to produce and sell lab-grown chicken meat in December 2020.
Subsequently, the cultured chicken product debuted as a two-dish combo – chicken and waffles on one plate, and chicken on a chinese steamed bun on the other served at a private member’s club, 1880.

First Self-Driving Taxi Service
Singapore became the first in the world to launch a self-driving taxi service to the public in August 2016. nuTonomy took it upon themselves to solve the problem of congested roads in Singapore with driverless robo-cars, starting with a trial which gained huge interest.
In 2017, this start-up was acquired by Delphi Automotive (now Aptiv), which then became part of the Motional autonomous driving joint venture with Hyundai Motor Group. Have you tried sitting in one of these driverless cars before?
Largest Floating Sports Platform
Did you know that the all-familiar The Float at Marina Bay is the largest floating platform used for sporting events? With 19,960 m² of usable space, the arena has hosted multiple football games and entertainment events, including the Singapore National Day Parade.
Unfortunately, the platform could be demolished from January 2022 and replaced by NS Square. I will definitely miss this place filled with so many memories when it’s gone.
First Congestion Pricing Scheme
Singapore was the first country in the world to implement a congestion pricing program, the Area Licensing Scheme on 2 June 1975. All vehicles entering the Central Business District, demarcated the “Restricted Zone” (RZ), were required to purchase and display a special licence.
This measure was declared successful in reducing the high volume of vehicles entering the RZ during morning peak hours, but was eventually replaced by the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system in 1998.
Longest Satay
Singaporeans love our satay but I guess Kopitiam Group of Companies (Singapore) loved them just a little more. 150 staff members grilled the longest satay ever, measuring at 140.02m, over charcoal fire at Lau Pa Sat on 21 July 2007.
That’s as high as a 54-storey HDB flat!
